Make sure your thermostat is set to “Cool” and the temperature is set lower than the current room temperature. It sounds simple, but a quick thermostat check can often solve the issue—especially after power outages or schedule changes.

Check your AC unit’s air filter monthly because a dirty filter can cause problems. When an air filter becomes clogged, it makes your AC works harder, which causes wear and tear and your AC unit becomes much less efficient at cooling your home. A clogged filter also can cause the coil to freeze.

If your AC isn’t turning on at all, head to your electrical panel and see if the breaker for your air conditioner has tripped. If it has, flip it off and back on. This could restore power without the need for a service call.

Try to keep everything clean because the last thing you want is a breakdown that could have been prevented by some simple cleaning. Air filters will be clogged if dust and grime on the AC unit is not cleaned.

Make sure that the area around your AC unit is clear of debris. There should not be any nearby plants or vegetation and ensure there is good clearance for proper ventilation.
